Oh yes, Once i am connected i stay connected just fine but it wont auto-connect…tks! I had the same thing on my laptop with Vista home — I could not see or connect to my wirless router.
I wish the Vista-help would have been more helpfull…. When i try to connect to wireless network with the Router, it throwing the error message ha " Unable to Connect to the Networks". I have a Netgear wireless router.
I have four computers hooked up to the router via ethernet wire 2 XP destops and two Vista laptops. When using the wired connection, the Vista laptop can see and access all computers on the network, however, when I switch the laptop to wireless, it only sees the other Vista laptop.
The laptop can access the internet while wired or wireless. I am using WEP security. Can anyone tell me what to do to get the laptop to see the entire network wirelessly? It's an acer laptop using windows vista…. I still can't connect to my wireless router, my dad, my sister even my ps3 that is far away from the router can go online! I am in serious need of help with my internet connection. Initially I couldn't connect at all- though I had a strong signal strength, typing in the network password was NOT gaining me access to the internet.
All the time, signal strength for my network is very strong and I am able to get on the internet. The problem is that the access fades in and out inexplicably, all the time. It will work perfectly for a few minutes and then I will get the yellow exclamation mark and the "Limited access" sign, and then it will reconnect and work perfectly again for a few minutes. Literally this happens all the time.
It's very frustrating. I don't understand: if I authenticated successfully, why is it fading in and out? I replaced the mb on a Toshiba ms and now I can't see the wireless card. I recovered the os to factory condition and have the latest driver but I still can't see the card. The card is a Realtek e. Hi, I have vista and I"m trying to add wap2 security to my wireless network.
I go to my router's setup page and add a password, which then appears to be saved for all of the wireless networks that are set up on my computer that's what it looks like in "Manage Wireless Networks".
Anyway, my problem is that then when I try to connect, it now asks me for username and password. But I don't know my username. There is nowhere on the router's set-up page where I can specify a username. Is it the name of the wireless network? That's not working. Any ideas on how to find out what my username is? Did you mean ad hoc PC-PC network? Since Windows Vista, 7 it is not able to connect automatically to ad hoc network. There is a couple of articles about how to connect to ad hoc network in Vista, Windows 7.
So I recommend you some specialized tool. Maxidix Wifi Suite, for examle can do it my choice , and everything works as I would like it to. Wish I help you. This problem had me stumped today for a few hours.
After reading this thread and trying a few solutions which didn't pan out, I finally got it fixed. Make sure to keep a note of any keys that you might be using otherwise you will have to regenerate the key and change all your other network devices. Be aware that your current connection to it will be severed — and if that computer usually connects using WPA2 information, Vista will throw up 'settings don't match' errors.
This is okay if you need to use it in the mean time, you can delete the stored security settings and change it to an Open non-encrypted network. Your network should show up as Open. Check that your network is not present, and if it is, delete it this is just clearing any settings which Vista might have saved. Click Apply. Your connection will once again be severed. Your network should appear, if you hover over you should now see WPA2 or your chosen security type.
Double click and hopefully it will now ask you for the security key! I believe this problem is something inherent in Vista, it incorrectly stores the security type of the network and won't refresh that data, and doesn't attempt to ask the network what security it is using when you try to connect.
I need help bad!! I changed from Bellsouth internet for my laptop and my laptop would secure and was not a problem. I switched to charter communications internet and since then I purchased laptops for my children.
My childrens laptops are Dell and they use Windows 7, they connect fine secure, but my windows Vista Acer laptop will not connect secure. I live in an apartment and have grown tired of everybody being on my internet and I can barely use it myself due to an influx of people. I called charter and they went through the motions again of trying to secure the internet on my laptop.
What is wrong? Does Bellsouth have a hold on my laptop or what? I am using Netgear from Charter and it accepts my password but it keeps saying the connection has timed out or error due to user.
I just don't know what to do. If anyone can help I would be grateful. Everybody else here can see and access my router.
But Vista says "cannot find any wireless networks" I don't have the "Manually connect to a wireless Network" option shown above". Vista used to give the option for a wireless connect. But now the only options are Broadband and Dial Up. What has to be changed to make the wireless option available?
Had to reinstall the factory VISTA operating system and now need to get back on a wireless network at home. Any suggestions? Problem: Red Cross in Wireless Lan overview and not able to connect worked before nothing changed.
Hi, I have a toshiba laptop running vista. I can connect to the wireless connection, however it is local only and will not allow me on the internet.
All other laptops are fine apart from two toshiba laptops. Anybody aware of a problem with toshiba that is preventing me from a full connection. I was in a different house last year and was able to connect to a different wireless connection no problem.
I have tried various things from support websites, such as uninstalling and reinstalling drivers but nothing seems to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have spent hours trying to fix this problem. John : Hey John… have the same problem… did you ever find a solution?? I have a unique problem. But the problem is that the XP cannot access the net.
Please HELP by letting me know what are the settings i should have. I have done all the usual suggestions. Thanks in advance Roy. My computer is an hp pavillion dv I have read over all of the post and figured out a few things. Windows Vista for many ppl here will connect to the secured wireless router but it won't be able to access the internet. I have had the same problem here. There are three computers at my house, two are windows 7, and the other one is windows vista.
I have tried many things, and all I have left to do that ican think of is to change the security type of the router. My windows vista has been able to connect to unsecured networks, but as it seems for everyone else and mine secured networks don't provide internet for it. So i would advise to change the internet security type to one compatible to windows vista. If there is anything else please!
I have the same problems with vista because of the apartment problems with the neighbor house plus steal your passwood too. I hope you find a better computer as well Thank-You Jeremy Pickett.
I seem to have similar problems with other people, I have a three year old computer emachine it works well. I tried to connect to internet using an internet adapter USB type. The adapter works fine and the signal from the modem wifi has an excellent signal, the computer says that windows is not set to automatically connect to myquest… The computer recognizes the ssid, ecription , and service key. The internet service tells me that the windows wont talk to internet, Help!
All i did was go to my routers online settings, it turned out that my computer would only connect to the internet when the router didn't have any specific security settings unsecured. But i didn't want anyone to be able to access my network so i set it so that their would be no security for the network, but you would still have to type in the network name. I would believe since i am starting fresh is that there should be no setting on the computer. This was the problem.
I had a primary computer let's call this A hooked up to my wireless successfully, and needed to connect two more computers let's call them B and C that kept giving me the 'settings do not match' sign. My settings for the two computers B and C were not set to the setting of computer A, so I did the following:.
I have a laptop with windows Vista installed and i followed all steps above but i can't see any local area connection is the footer menu of my windows and i can't connect it at all. What should i do? I have set up my network after much hassle and support from manufacturer but every time I turn the computer off or even to standby, when it turns back on I have to manually select the wireless network!! I have been into the Network and sharing centre and changed the settings to "start this connection automatically" but still every time I sleep the laptop or turn to standby, it seems to default to my old ethernet modem connection and the only way to browse the internet is to either, reconnect the computer to the modem by wire or manually select the wireless network??
How to reinstall wifi it was connected to my computer and now it said disable no internet sites. I can not find out to install. Hi I've followed these instructions and it says connected but when I click on Internet explorer it comes up with cannot display web page?? I'm a user of lenovo a Trying to call customer care to solve my technical problems. I called Customer Care for many times but I couldn't be satisfied.

Regards Raja Normally I do not learn post on blogs, but I wish to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look at and do it! Your writing taste has been surprised me.
I have been wrestling with this for four days and tried as many of the above things as I felt competent to attempt. Today, I tried to install a 3com wireless adapter that I had from a previous machine that had no wireless card in it I bought the adapter with the 3com router.
This didn't seem to work so I gave up. Other than that, I am lost to explain what has happened. Relief tinged with nerves that this might be temporary. Ok, an update to the last message.
Two weeks on and the wireless connection routinely fails when I am in the same room as the router or in the room below it but it routinely works when I am three rooms away. So now I work by the fire in the living room could be worse. However, the connection timeout is almost certainly caused by the signal from the router being too strong. If I keep my distance, that gives it time to log on successfully.
Also, I have had no problems with numerous other wireless networks I have encountered in hotels and public spaces, so it is not a hardware issue. Wow - this problem is 3 years down the track - anyone find any solutions yet? I was not able to connect to my netgear wnrpt range extender or my verizon Hotspot. Amazingly I installed Windows 7 and it corrected both of these problems. The problem is a Windows Vista issue. Upgrading to windows 7 will definitely solve this problem and many other problems you might be having with Vista.
I know some of these posts are quite old but I figured I'd post my solution that finally solved this annoying puzzle. For WEP at least. One person's suggestion somewhere similar to the poster above me suggested updating the wireless network card's driver. Even when I went to HP. I eventually just did a Google search for "Atheros xxx Driver. The info should all be there. After I found a version 9. A lot of people suggest "Hey why not just use WEP?
You might as well leave it unsecured or put up a big sign in your yard with your WEP password, Lol ;D Hope this is of help to somone out there. Office Office Exchange Server.

If i disable WPA security on the router it connects no problem. Any help would be wonderfull.
Friday, June 16, AM. Monday, July 17, PM. I have mine set to WEP and it connects. Though I had the broadcasting turned off and it wouldn't connect at all for some reason.
Friday, June 16, PM. I Have no problem connecting with xp on the same machine using the same hardware and never have. Sunday, July 16, PM. I am running Vista RC1 on my laptop and am experiencing the same behavior -- attempting to connect to a wireless network using WPA-Personal with AES encryption fails with a timeout.
I am using the correct authentication type and key because if I provide incorrect information, I get a different error saying as much. I can connect to unsecured wireless networks without issue. When looking at informational events from the new Diagnostic Framework, I see that the "root problem" as determined by the tool is in Layer 2, "mulitcast keys not generated before the timeout.
Thanks in advace! Monday, September 11, PM. That worked for me. Friday, October 6, PM. Sunday, October 8, AM. Where did you get the build from? I have not seen any mention of it on the download site and would like to try it to see if I can get my laptop to connect to my WPA enabled router. Monday, October 9, PM. I need your help guys! Sunday, October 29, PM. Monday, December 4, PM. As I recall, I got the same behavior from the default Windows Vista drivers. Saturday, January 27, AM.
Trying to connect to a 3Com router with WPA enabled. It will connect with either encryption disabled or WEP encryption but neither of these are ideal! I've installed the latest driver from the Intel site, but still having the same issue Wednesday, January 31, AM. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Saturday, February 10, AM. Saturday, February 10, PM. Sunday, February 11, PM. I too am having the WPA issues, I've resorted to wep for now..
Tuesday, February 13, AM. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a Vista incompatibility with my router, rather than my network card. I'm trying to connect to a 3Com ADSL router, is anyone experiencing these timeout problems with a different brand of router? Wednesday, February 14, PM. Using It just wouldn't do WPA until I upgraded the driver and got lucky.
Now it's working fine. I had no issues with my Buffalo router at homme using WEP. My cubicle mate said it just starting work for him at some point. Go figure! I'm convinced it's a Vista issue combined with the drivers regardless of the access point used. It's certainly a confusing issue, I had to use the XP drivers with Vista to get the card detected and working, I've read reports from other users with the same card who had no problems connecting once they had the drivers installed, that's what made me wonder about the router possibly being a common link.
Like all the other people having this trouble, I've had no problems whatsoever running this kit in XP, so hopefully it is a niggle in the new Vista network code or a compatibility problem with using the XP drivers, I'm certainly not willing to replace any of my wireless kit simply to run Vista. Thursday, February 15, AM. Vista and WPA1 certainly appears to be the only common factor here. Friday, February 16, AM. I have the exact same problem.
Sunday, February 18, PM. Raider, what type of router are you using? Tuesday, February 20, AM. Tuesday, February 20, PM. Wednesday, February 21, AM. Hi All I have had this problem for a while now also. As per a previous response I have tried updating to the latest Intel drivers but still get the the same timeout error message. Again as mentioned it fails if i type a random password but times out using the correct one.
I've also tried using an RALink equivalent USB adapter with its latest Vista drivers, which shipped with the Ozenda router I have, but again get the timeout error so it seems unlikely to be driver related??? Wednesday, February 21, PM. Friday, February 23, AM. Friday, February 23, PM. Well, I'm not sure what has changed, but now I can reliably connect if I turn off the wireless switch on my laptop for a few seconds, then turn it back on again. Odd given previously a reboot wouldn't fix it and I could have sworn I'd tried this.
I had previously connected via an ethernet cable to my router so I could at least do some internet work, but apart from that Saturday, February 24, AM. It's driving me mad Sunday, February 25, PM.
Wednesday, February 28, AM. Both work under XP, but under Vista only mine connects. Friday, March 2, PM. With no encryption at all it works fine, with WPA, no way Saturday, March 3, PM.
I found a solution! Friday, March 16, PM. Where exactly you find that? Saturday, March 17, PM. Might work with other Linksys routers and perhaps other brands. On Security setup page, in the Internet filter section, uncheck "Filter Multicast". Simple as that. Vista's Network Event Error Log led me to this solution. Error logs almost always give you a clear idea of what you are up against, if you can interpret what u see.
Good luck to all on solving this problem. Sunday, March 25, PM. Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my new laptot that has Windows Vista on. I found two options to connect it successufully to the web: 1 set the router to wep security only and the network security option in the computer to wep 2 Set the router to wpa security only and the network security option in the computer to wpa-personal and select tkip instead of aes Basically, the new computer with Vista on, does not connect to the internet if the router has both wep and wpa security.

I am trying to connect to my university's wireless network with my laptop, worked fine under XP but since installing vista i can detect the network and it asks me to input my user name and password, when i click ok the box just pops back up to enter user name etc.

If you can get into your windows "manage wireless connection" one thing that Drove me nuts was seeing that windows was setting my wpa2 to enterprise wpa2. Id change it and then it would connect but to fix it I had to delete my connection from the list and use the Check for connections icon in the taskbar and run the setup.
Now vista says "oh o. Double check if that will help you. Thursday, May 10, PM. I had thought the issue was the router Netgear so I switched to trendnet. Cicorias, Do you use DHCP? If yes do you fix the mac on the scope? What is your dhcp lease time? Wednesday, May 23, AM. I do use DHCP. I did lower the roaming agressiveness to it's lowest setting.
Wednesday, May 23, PM. My router is a Belkin F5DA router Are you using the same router and got it working under WPA personal encryptions?
Thursday, May 24, PM. Well, It's back again for me too. Same issue, the NETw4v32 error never stops populating the event log. I have several machines, Toshiba, Dell that all have the exact same issue on Vista. What poor quality. I was going to try to replace the card with an Atheros card, but on the Toshiba it requires way too much disassembly to get to the mini-pci card.
Saturday, May 26, PM. There's an updated driver there now. Trying now. I have also tried that dirver version and still doing the same, with timeout message and such.
I've tried 3 routers: Belkin, Netgear, now TrendNet. Sunday, May 27, AM. With the latest I've rolled back to the inbox driver that came with Vista RTM. My guess is, those on this thread in the past with no posting of current issues has rolled back to the inbox. Monday, May 28, PM. Is anyone using the ProSet software the Intel provides and any luck with it and the latest drivers?
I wonder if that's why some folks are no longer reporting issues. Another question, I'm potentially going to replace the abg card, but I started down the path with a Toshiba M5 and it requires quite a bit of disassembly.
Any pointers on the level of disassembly? Tuesday, May 29, AM. Is anybody know howto launch Intel Wireless Proset connection utility in Vista? Now in Vista there isn't a good driver from Intel and I cannot find the custom Intel connection tool, so I can't connect to my router. I don't know if it's a driver issue or a vista fault but I can connect in XP and Ubuntu, but not in Vista.
My router doesn't support wpa2 so that is not an option. Tuesday, May 29, PM. ElectricVehicle wrote: Currently, I'm trying to get the Intel I install Wednesday, May 30, AM. Monday, June 4, AM. Tuesday, June 5, PM. You know on a side note ive seen in the warm weather is that the intel wireless card in my pc tends to shut down in the heat of the day. It will be running and then all of a sudden loose connection and not find my wireless router.
It got annoying enough i had to do wired connection. Ive ended up shutting down the computer and running the fan in my room. Nothing else is effected on pc except the wireless card. Please check: "Connect automatically when this network is in range" "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting" in Wireless properties. I dechecked IPV6 too. I am having this issue on an acer with an Atheros arG. Here is what I have posted to Acer OEM windows - pre-installed rubbish - would rather have had XP When connecting to a linksys wireless router, the machine will not connect, the acer software actually pops up a message saying "internet disconnected" and when you diagnose, it reports as a time out.
The laptop was bought just so my partner ould work from home, so it is now pretty redundant. A recovery will normally wipe the machine to the state it was in when you purchased it. I got no problem to connect to a network with no encryption and wep encryption. But no way to connect to a wpa encrypted network So I upgraded to the V At first Vista home premium didn't recognize it, so I have installed a first driver which was a V5.
Thus I got the device working with no encryption and wep encrypted networks, but not with a wpa ecrypted network. As there was very few options with this driver, I have installed an newer one V6. And with it, it's working very well whith WPA encrypted network So in my case everything was a driver-based failure You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
